JTF 1984: Airstrip One

MEMORANDUM

TO: Joint Task Force for Structural Integrity (Distribution Restricted)

FROM: The Inner Party Directorate

DATE: 7 October 1994

SUBJECT: EMERGENCY DIRECTIVE - SECURING AIRSTRIP ONE

Comrades,

The Ministry of Love has concluded the enhanced interrogation of a lower-level Outer Party officer engaging in crimethink and revealed critical intelligence concerning the security of the state.

A cancer has been festering within our borders. A thoughtcrime syndicate known as Clockwork has established a network of influence across the prole sectors in major cities since January. The Ministry of Truth’s behavioral analytics support this revelation, as data indicates an unprecedented level of discontent and restlessness amongst the prole population.

Furthermore, our geopolitical security is in jeopardy. For decades, the Western powers have remained indifferent to our isolation to deal with the existential Soviet threat. However, with the recent collapse of the Soviet state, the United States and NATO have redirected their focus toward Airstrip One. Though they know nothing of our internal affairs, the Ministry of Liberty has thwarted a recent surge of increasingly aggressive espionage attempts and reconnaissance incursions. The outside world is beginning to view our silence with growing suspicion and becoming hostile to our existence.

We must maintain this fragile illusion at all costs. The downfall of the Party is all but guaranteed if the rebels awaken the proles to revolution or the outside world discovers the true nature of our domestic affairs. The West will not hesitate to supply the insurgency and possibly launch a full-scale invasion on Airstrip One.

You have been selected for this Task Force for your unquestionable loyalty to the Inner Party and your demonstrated ability to enforce the will of Ingsoc at any cost. Your objective is twofold:

1) Eradicate the insurgency and reassert the Inner Party’s authority over the Outer Party and prole population.

2) Ensure the outside world remains oblivious to our internal operations and prevent rebel communications outside Airstrip One.

There is no margin for error. War is Peace. Freedom is Slavery. Ignorance is Strength.

You will secure the state, or you will be unpersoned. Failure does not exist; there will only be the void where you once stood.

BIG BROTHER IS WATCHING YOU.
