IAEA

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) is an international organization responsible for promoting the safe, secure, and peaceful use of nuclear technology. The agency works with its member states to monitor worldwide nuclear programs, conduct inspections, and ensure that nuclear materials intended for peaceful purposes are not diverted toward the development of weapons. Its responsibilities also extend beyond non-proliferation to areas such as nuclear energy, radiation safety, radioactive waste management, medicine, agriculture, and scientific research.
The first topic of this committee will examine how the international community can protect Europe's largest nuclear power facility, the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant, while it remains both under Russian control and exposed to the ongoing war in Ukraine. Delegates will need to consider issues including military activity near the plant, access for IAEA inspectors, reliable power and cooling systems, and proposals to better protect the facility from the conflict itself.
The second topic will focus on Iran's expanding uranium enrichment program and the difficulty of ensuring that its nuclear activities remain peaceful. Delegates will consider how the IAEA can strengthen its verification and monitoring of Iran's facilities and stockpiles while addressing disagreements over enrichment, sanctions, Iran's rights under the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, and the risk of a wider regional arms race in the Middle East.

This committee follows parliamentary procedure as defined in our Standard Committee Parley Pro Document. However, procedure during committee may be modified at the Chair’s discretion.

Position Paper

All delegates wishing to be considered for an award must submit a position paper before the start of conference. Position paper quality will be included in consideration of awards, however paper quality will not hold as much weight in award consideration as actual committee performance. Position papers are meant to ensure a basis for delegate research and help delegates feel confident while participating during the conference.
